There is no denying that, ever since the beginning of the technological boom, the IT sector has been seen as predominantly male. However, today, there is no reason to ask why we need women in tech because we can't imagine a modern IT world without women's creativity and multitasking. Some progress has been made in gender equality, but there are still differences in pay, a lack of women in top management roles, and professions that men control. 

All this shows that absolute equality has yet to be reached. Statistics reveal that, despite the seeming equality of rights, there is still a gender disparity in salaries, specializations where males predominate over women, and TOP management positions where women continue to be the exception rather than the rules.

As you know, people who work in development love facts and truth. So, let's start with data gathered from different sources about the number of women working in tech, their rates, and other statistics. 

As an illustration, No Fluff Jobs, a Polish job search engine, studied salary trends for women in the IT industry in Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Hungary. The study found significant differences in pay between men and women. For example, in Ukraine, women made 13% less than men. According to the research, only 8% of women in the Ukrainian IT industry made more than $3,300 a month, with almost one in four (26%) earning between $550 and $1,100. Interestingly, just 3.55% of Ukrainian female professionals said they had a salary that they wanted. The Netherlands had almost twice as many women in this group (6.21%).

Based on official Ukranian statistics, women earn around 18.4% less than men. The average salary difference between men and women in the EU is 13%. Female candidates often report 10–30% lower salaries than male applicants, according to Djinni.

However, results from a poll by the recruitment company Indigo show that the pay gap between men and women is decreasing. Women earned 40% less than males in 2022, but this difference was reduced to 5% this year. But you can understand the situation only when you look more closely at certain employment positions. For example, in Ukraine, women often hold lower-paying posts like HR managers while males typically have the highest-paying ones like CTO.

In Ukraine, more and more women are working in IT, but they still only make up about 25% of all IT workers. An essential factor that influences how many women work in tech is the educational system and established cultural norms. For instance, some families can be biased about girl's education. Technical universities, where male-dominated technical specialties have traditionally existed, provide statistics that support this statement. Statistical data reveals that at Kyiv Polytechnic University, the most significant technical university in the Ukraine, the graduation ratio is 30 boys and 5 girls. In other words, rather than workplace discrimination, we see young girls' parents focusing on traditional careers for women.

Sadly, there are more issues than income discrimination. Asking questions regarding family planning forced 21% of Ukrainian women and over a third had to to disclose their age and number of children. In contrast, 16% of people in the Czech Republic talked about gender. Age is the most talked-about issue in the Netherlands (21 %). We must take note of this and speak out when appropriate. Gender does not define a professional level; leadership is about the ability to inspire and encourage others, not the color of one's lips. 

Even though males still predominate in the IT industry, women have a lot of opportunities here. Reducing the disparity in salary between men and women requires intentional action. It's critical to keep up with the most recent research on fair pay rates, recognize the worth of your job, and have the self-assurance to request appropriate wages in interviews. Instead of focusing on differences between men and women, we should see that both men and women are equally productive. Gender equality is good for the business as a whole, according to many studies. 

It's important to note that some well-known companies make it a part of their policies to support equal rights for men and women. For example, IBM developed a leadership program specifically for women, and Salesforce conducted a salary audit and, after that, spent $3 million on salary adjustment to close the gender pay gap. One more step toward eliminating the wage gap between men and women is obvious methods of raising salaries.

Many people need to realize how valuable women experts in technology are. Firstly, women tend to be collaborative, inclusive, and empathic leaders. Second, studies have shown that having a mix of male and female leaders is good for business. It should be highlighted that the presence of women in the IT industry promotes diversity to foster success and new ideas. Diverse teams, after all, consistently provide a wide variety of creative ideas, leading to innovative solutions. Working in a place that encourages and values women's growth makes them more likely to succeed and share their new ideas. Women gain from this, as do the businesses they work for and the technology sector.
